What is a CSV file?
A CSV file is a "comma separated values" file. It is the simplest way to record tabular data such as you find in a spreadsheet (or the table of Walkers above). CSV is also the
recognized standard for this kind of data so that the many different spreadsheet programs (i.e. Microsoft Excel, OpenOffice, GoogleDocs, Quattro Pro, etc.) can all open them.
Basically each data-point or "field" is separated by a comma; and each record is on a new line.
How do I save the CSV file to use with a program on my computer?
Saving a file from your browser depends on your browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, FireFox, etc.), your operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac, etc.) and the settings you
have for your browser, operating system, and other installed software. Usually, you can click on the link to the file and your computer will automatically use the correct application
to open the target file. However, if this does not work, or you want to open the file in another application, you can right-click the hyperlink and save the target file to your computer.
Different browsers phrase this option a bit differently. In Internet Explorer you right-click and select "Save Target As..." In FireFox or Google Chrome, you right-click and select "Save Link As..."
How do I open a CSV file in Microsoft Excel?
1) After saving the file to your computer, Choose File > Open.
2) Use the "Files of type" drop down menu to switch to All Files.
3) Browse out to find your file, it will most likely have an Excel Icon already on it.
4) Choose Open.
5) Excel will guide you through steps to make the CSV data appear how you would like it to in Excel.
